Most English wine is produced in the south, where the majority of viticulture is centered as the climate is slightly warmer and drier. With a little help from global warming, the average annual temperatures are on the rise and the issues with grapes ripening that have long plagued England’s winemakers may soon become a thing of the past. But for now, the best regions for viticulture are along the southern strip of England’s coast, from Cornwall to Kent, and they share similar climates, soil types and grow an array of cool-climate suitable grapes varieties. Although some still wines are made, it is the traditional method sparkling that consistently captures people’s attention and also represents the majority of English wine production at over 65% of all wine made. Sussex is poised to become the first region to be awarded PDO status in England.

Exton Park has 55 acres of vines set over stunning Hampshire landscape. Led by winemaker Corinne Seely, Exton Park is a specialist producer of English Sparkling from traditional Champagne varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Corinne’s winemaking approach marries art and science, drawing on experience gained in Bordeaux at the prestigious grand cru classé Domaine de Chevalier before becoming consultant winemaker around the world. She spent time in Australia, the Languedoc and the Douro before finally discovering England. She joined Exton Park in 2011 where she has been instrumental in developing the philosophy, creating imaginative and unexpected wines that flourish out of an English climate.

Tasting note: Lively golden in colour. The nose is showing an abundance of tropical fruit with the classic citrus notes, too. A chalky, flinty smokiness makes the wine stand out and it has a real rounded, super savoury finish.
Winemaking Detail: Hand harvested across the 60 acre vineyard, selecting the ripest rows to pick each morning. A slow, gentle press over 6-7 hours. The RB45 is a blend of 45 individual base wines from multiple plots, multiple vintages but from one single vineyard, making a consistant expression of site. 35% of the blend is put through malolactic fermentation with 25% of the blend being aged in second use Burgundy barrels.
